The Fortune Is in the Follow Up
Eighty percent of deals require at least five follow ups, but 44% of salespeople give up after just one. Following up is not annoying if you do it right. It is professional, persistent, and provides value at every touch.
Why Prospects Do Not Reply
Most non-responses are not rejections. They are the result of competing priorities, overflowing inboxes, and poor timing. Your prospect may have read your email, intended to reply, and then gotten distracted. A well timed follow up often arrives at exactly the moment they are ready to engage.
The Value-Add Follow Up
Never send a follow up that just says "bumping this to the top of your inbox" or "just checking in." These add no value and signal laziness. Every follow up should provide something new: a relevant article, a case study, an industry insight, or a new angle on the problem you solve.
"I came across this article about [their industry trend] and thought of our conversation. It reinforces why [specific point from your previous message]."
The Different Angle Follow Up
If your first email focused on one pain point, try a different one. "In my last email, I mentioned how we help with [problem A]. Another area where businesses like yours often see quick results is [problem B]. Would either of these be worth a brief conversation?"
The Social Proof Follow Up
Share a relevant result from a similar client. "Since my last email, we helped [similar company] achieve [specific result]. I thought you might find their approach interesting, especially given what you mentioned about [their challenge]."
Timing Your Sequence
Follow up at day 2, day 5, day 10, day 17, and day 25 after the initial outreach. After five follow ups with no response, send a breakup email. "I have not heard back, so I will assume the timing is not right. If things change, I am easy to reach." This often triggers a response from prospects who felt too guilty to reply earlier.
Keep It Short
Each follow up should be shorter than the last. Your fifth email should be two to three sentences maximum. Brevity respects the prospect's time and makes it easy to respond.
Track and Learn
Monitor which follow up emails get the most responses. Note the timing, the angle, and the value offered. Over time, you will develop a follow up formula that consistently converts silence into conversations.
