Why warming up leads matters
Cold outreach works, but warm outreach works better. When a prospect has some familiarity with you before you make contact, your response rates increase dramatically. Research shows that warm outreach can achieve response rates three to five times higher than completely cold approaches.
The good news is that warming up a cold lead does not take much effort if you do it strategically.
Social media engagement
The easiest way to get on someone's radar before you contact them is through social media:
- Follow them on LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter
- Like their posts consistently over a week or two
- Leave thoughtful comments on their content (not generic ones like "Great post!")
- Share their content with your own audience, tagging them
After a week or two of this, when you send a connection request or email, your name is already familiar. You are not a complete stranger anymore.
Mutual connections
If you share a mutual connection with your prospect, ask for an introduction. A warm introduction from a trusted contact is the most powerful way to open a door.
Even if you cannot get a formal introduction, mentioning a shared connection in your outreach adds credibility. "I noticed we both know [name]" is a simple but effective opener.
Engage with their business
Before reaching out:
- Visit their website and learn about their business
- Follow their company on social media
- Leave a genuine review if you have used their product or service
- Sign up for their newsletter and reference something they sent
Content as a warming tool
Creating and sharing content positions you as someone worth paying attention to. If you post regularly about topics relevant to your prospect's industry, there is a chance they will discover you organically before you ever reach out.
The timing gap
The key to warming up leads is patience. Most agents want to contact prospects immediately after finding them. Instead, invest a few days to a couple of weeks in the warming process. The improvement in response rates more than compensates for the delay.
Putting it together
A simple warming sequence might look like this:
- Day 1: Follow them on LinkedIn
- Day 3: Like and comment on their content
- Day 7: Share one of their posts
- Day 10: Send a personalised connection request
- Day 14: Start a conversation via direct message
By day 14, you have gone from complete stranger to familiar name. That makes all the difference.
