The motivation challenge
Commission only sales is one of the most rewarding career paths, but it comes with a unique motivation challenge. There is no guaranteed pay cheque at the end of the month. Your income directly reflects your effort and results, and that can be both empowering and exhausting.
Staying motivated when deals are not closing, when prospects ghost you, or when your bank account is lower than you would like requires specific strategies.
Set clear, measurable goals
Vague goals like "sell more" or "make more money" do not work. Set specific targets:
- Daily: Make 10 calls, send 15 emails, connect with 5 people on LinkedIn
- Weekly: Book 3 meetings, close 1 deal
- Monthly: Generate $X in commission
- Quarterly: Add X new customers to your portfolio
Write these down and review them daily. The act of tracking progress is itself motivating.
Focus on activity, not outcomes
You cannot control whether a prospect says yes. You can control how many prospects you talk to. On days when deals are not closing, focus on your activity metrics. If you are making the calls and having the conversations, the results will follow.
Create financial buffers
One of the biggest sources of stress in commission sales is financial pressure during slow periods. Build a buffer by:
- Setting aside two to three months of living expenses as an emergency fund
- Saving a percentage of every commission cheque before spending anything
- Building recurring commission income that provides a baseline even in slow months
Celebrate small wins
Do not wait for the big deal to celebrate. Every positive outcome is a win worth acknowledging:
- A positive response to a cold email
- A meeting booked
- A productive conversation, even if it did not lead to a sale
- A referral from a happy customer
- Learning a new skill or overcoming a fear
Find your community
Sales can be lonely, especially if you work independently. Surround yourself with other agents who understand the highs and lows. This might be:
- Online communities and forums
- Local sales networking groups
- Mastermind groups with other agents
- The Zepys agent community
Having people to share wins and frustrations with makes a significant difference in your long term motivation.
Take care of yourself
Burnout is real in commission sales. Protect your energy by:
- Setting boundaries between work and personal time
- Exercising regularly
- Getting enough sleep
- Taking breaks during the day
- Scheduling time off, even when you feel like you should be working
Your ability to sell effectively is directly tied to your physical and mental wellbeing. Neglecting yourself is not a strategy. It is a shortcut to burnout.
