Understanding the NFP Sector

Not for profit organisations make up a significant part of the Australian economy, with over 600,000 registered entities. They range from large national charities to small community groups, and they need many of the same products and services as commercial businesses.

How NFPs Buy

NFP purchasing decisions are different from commercial ones. Budgets are tighter and spending is scrutinised more carefully because the money ultimately comes from donors, grants, or government funding. Decision making often involves committees rather than individual buyers, which lengthens the sales cycle.

Frame Your Value Differently

Commercial businesses buy to increase profit. NFPs buy to increase impact. Frame your product's value in terms of how it helps the organisation achieve its mission more effectively. "This system frees up 20 hours per month that your team can redirect to service delivery" resonates more than "this increases productivity by 15%."

Price Sensitivity

Many NFPs operate on limited budgets and expect preferential pricing. Check with the companies you represent about NFP discounts or special pricing. If the product does not have an official NFP price, negotiate on the organisation's behalf.

Be transparent about pricing. NFPs appreciate honesty and are turned off by perceived overcharging.

The Decision Process

Expect a longer decision cycle with NFPs. Proposals may need board approval, and budget cycles might mean the purchase cannot happen until the next financial year. Be patient and stay engaged throughout the process without being pushy.

Building Trust

NFPs are mission driven and deeply values oriented. They want to work with people and companies that share their commitment to doing good. Demonstrate genuine interest in their mission and show how your product supports their work.

Common Product Needs

NFPs need donor management and CRM systems, accounting and financial reporting tools, volunteer management platforms, communication and marketing tools, IT infrastructure, and insurance. Many of these categories offer commission based selling opportunities.

The Network Effect

The NFP sector is highly networked. Board members sit across multiple organisations, and sector conferences bring hundreds of organisations together. A strong reputation within the NFP community can generate a steady stream of referrals and opportunities.

Social Enterprise Alignment

If you are passionate about making a difference, selling to NFPs lets you earn a living while supporting causes you care about. This alignment of values and income can be deeply satisfying and sustainable.
