Tradies need software but they do not want complicated
The trades industry in Australia is enormous. Electricians, plumbers, builders, painters, landscapers, HVAC technicians. There are hundreds of thousands of trade businesses, and most of them are underserved when it comes to technology.
Many tradies still manage their businesses with paper, text messages, and spreadsheets. They know they need better tools, but they do not have time to research options or patience for complicated software.
What tradies actually buy
The software products with the highest demand among trade businesses are:
Job management software. Tools that help them schedule jobs, track progress, send quotes, and invoice clients. This is the number one need for most tradies.
Accounting software. Xero and MYOB dominate the Australian market, but many tradies need help getting set up and actually using their accounting tools.
GPS and fleet tracking. For businesses with multiple vehicles and crews, tracking where everyone is and optimising routes saves time and fuel.
Safety and compliance tools. Especially for builders and larger operations, digital safety management tools are increasingly required.
How to approach tradies
Tradies are practical, no nonsense people. They do not want a PowerPoint presentation. They want you to show them how your product saves them time or money in plain language.
The best way to reach tradies is through their networks. Trade supply stores, industry associations, local Facebook groups, and word of mouth are all effective channels.
When you do get in front of a tradie, keep the conversation short and focused on outcomes. "This will save you two hours a day on quoting and invoicing" resonates. "Our platform leverages cloud based workflow automation" does not.
Timing matters
Do not call tradies during the work day. They are on job sites and will not take your call. The best times are early morning before they start work (around 6:30 to 7am) or late afternoon after they finish (around 4 to 5pm). Some tradies also handle admin on weekday evenings or Saturday mornings.
Build trust through results
Tradies talk to each other constantly. If you help one plumber save time and money, his mates will hear about it. A single good referral in a trade network can generate five to ten new clients.
On the flip side, if you sell a tradie something that does not work or wastes their time, word travels just as fast. Only sell products that genuinely help.
The opportunity is huge
Most tradies know they need better tools but do not know where to start. Position yourself as the person who makes technology simple for them, and you will build a loyal, growing client base in a market with enormous potential.
