Remote selling is the new normal
The days when every sale required a handshake and a face to face meeting are behind us. Remote selling was already growing before the pandemic, and now it is the standard for a huge portion of B2B and B2C transactions.
For independent sales agents, this is great news. It means you can sell to anyone in Australia (or beyond) without the cost and time of travel.
Setting up for success
Your remote selling setup matters more than you think. Invest in:
- A reliable internet connection. Dropped calls and frozen video kill credibility.
- A decent webcam and microphone. You do not need studio quality, but built in laptop hardware usually is not enough.
- A clean, professional background. A tidy space or a simple virtual background works.
- Good lighting. Sit facing a window or use a desk lamp. Avoid being backlit.
Building trust without physical presence
Trust is harder to build through a screen, but not impossible. The key principles:
- Turn your camera on. Always. People trust faces, not voices.
- Be punctual. Starting on time shows professionalism.
- Listen more than you talk. This matters in person too, but it is even more important remotely because distractions are everywhere.
- Send a follow up summary after every call. This shows you were paying attention and gives the prospect something to reference.
Presenting remotely
Screen sharing is your best friend. Walk prospects through your product visually rather than just talking about it. Keep your presentations short and interactive. Ask questions throughout to keep them engaged.
A common mistake is spending 30 minutes presenting and then asking "any questions?" at the end. By that point, you have lost them. Check in every five minutes.
Closing remotely
Many agents worry that closing is harder remotely. In practice, it is often easier because:
- Digital signatures make contracts instant
- Payment processing is immediate
- There is less social pressure, so prospects feel more comfortable saying yes (or no) honestly
When you are ready to close, be direct. "Based on what we have discussed, it sounds like this could work well for your business. Should we get you set up?"
Managing your remote sales pipeline
Use a CRM or platform like Zepys to track your conversations, follow ups, and deals. Without the natural reminders of in person meetings, it is easy to let prospects fall through the cracks.
Remote selling is a skill, and like any skill, it gets easier with practice. Start with the basics and refine your approach as you learn what works for your audience.
