Why cold email still works

Despite what some people claim, cold email is far from dead. When done well, it remains one of the most cost effective ways for independent sales agents to reach new prospects. The key is writing emails that feel personal, relevant, and worth responding to.

The principles behind effective cold emails

Before you copy any template, understand the principles:

  1. Keep it short. Under 100 words if possible.
  2. Make it about them, not you. Lead with their problem, not your product.
  3. Include one clear call to action. Do not give them three things to do.
  4. Personalise the first line. Reference something specific about their business.

Template 1: The problem opener

Subject: Quick question about [their specific challenge]

Hi [Name],

I noticed [something specific about their business, e.g. "you recently expanded to a second location"]. Congrats on the growth.

A lot of businesses at that stage run into [specific problem your product solves]. I work with a [product type] that has helped similar businesses [specific result].

Would you be open to a quick 10 minute chat this week to see if it could help?

Cheers, [Your name]

Template 2: The mutual connection

Subject: [Mutual connection name] suggested I reach out

Hi [Name],

[Mutual connection] mentioned you might be looking for a better way to handle [problem area]. I have been helping businesses in [their industry] with exactly that.

Happy to share what is working for others in your space if you have 10 minutes this week.

Best, [Your name]

Template 3: The value first approach

Subject: Idea for [their business name]

Hi [Name],

I came across [their business] and had a thought on how you could [specific improvement, e.g. "reduce your customer churn by 20%"].

I have seen this work for three other [industry] businesses in the last few months. Would it be worth a quick conversation?

[Your name]

Following up

Most replies come from follow up emails, not the first one. Send a polite follow up three to five business days later. Keep it brief: "Just bumping this up in case it got buried. Would love to chat if the timing works."

Two to three follow ups is standard. More than that and you risk being annoying.
